What's Your Setup?

Postby rob » Thu Dec 16, 2010 5:34 am

Thought it might be interesting to see what kind of setup everyone has. I'll go first:

My Home Studio
- Windows XP with Cubase SX3
- Korg Triton Classic (Original)
- Roland Gaia - SH-01
- Korg Electribe SX
- Alesis 1622 mixer
- Steinberg MI-4
- Godin Guitar + others
- Marshall Valvestate 100V
- Digitech 2112 Guitar Processor
- Shure KSM-27 Condeser
- Other Mics etc.
- Tannoy Reveal monitors powered by a cheap amp

Live Rig
- Korg Triton Classic (Original)
- Roland Gaia - SH-01

Currently Unused
- Alesis SR-16
- Roland MC-303
- Various Rack Gear

My main issue with my setup right now is that I am constantly switching midi cables between the triton, gaia nad electribe for recording in Cubase. Anyone know a cheap way to solve that?

What are you using?

I connect my Korg M1, Korg Trinity and Roland E-50 arranger via midi to the pc using a Roland Edirol UM-3EX. I have used it for over a year and it has worked flawlessly using windows xp. All three synths run ok simultaeneously.

Currently, listed on various uk websites around £70.

Before that I built my own device which simply connected all devices together. But if I ran two at the same time, stray echo signals occurred.

Here is my current arsenal of synths ect. Roland Gaia, JP8000, DR880, SP404, Alesis Ion & Micron, Novation Bass Station & KS5, Blofeld desktop, Akai EWI4000s, Korg Radias, MS2000BR, Micro X, M50 61, Zoom MRT3b. I record to a Yamaha AW16G. I sold my ancient Korg analog stuff ( MS10, MS20, SQ10) and bought the Gaia and I couldn't be happier! The Gaia to me is the ARP 2600 that I never had, plus it does more. Also I'm getting rid of the JP8000, IMHO the Gaia has that sonic territory covered.

Hey all! Good to see that someone has a dedicated Gaia forum set-up. Great stuff :)

Anyways, my humble home studio setup:

- Windows 7 PC (overclocked Core 2 Duo E8400, 4GB RAM)
- Cubase Studio 5.5 with various VSTis
- EMU 0404 USB audio interface
- KRK Rokit RP5 G2 monitors
- Novation SL61 MkII controller keyboard
- Roland JV-1010 sound module
- sE Electronics X1 mic, with Project Studio Reflexion Filter (don't use this much, as I'm not much of a singer)
- and of course, my new Gaia.

I also have a Burns B3 theremin, Korg Monotron, a Stylophone (lol), and a large laser harp which I build for a Uni project...but I don't really use these for normal music production lol. I have the Gair mounted second-tier above the Novation, which controls the JV-1010 and Gaia by MIDI. Makes for a flexible setup. The 1010 is old, but it's still good enough for pianos and and some keys in live performance - plus it's tiddly.

Heya,

my setup is much smaller than you guys, but very functional ;-)

Roland JP8000
Roland TB303
Roland GAIA
Big analog modular (self built)
Cubase 5, loads of vst(i)'s

regarding your MIDI question, I had the same problem, then a friend donated a Emagic Unitor 8 and all my problems disappeared. Its an old thing and can be picked up on ebay for under $200 often. It's a simple 8 in/out MIDI interface. The old win2K drivers work under XP, no idea about vista or 7. Its extremely stable and gives you a dedicated midi interface for each instrument. This is so much less hassle that having to crap around with midi-thru's and channel assignement etc!!!!

I'm using this gear for live gigs and band rehersals, I don't really deal much with home recording (yet) ...

Current setup:
Kurzweil PC3
Nord Electro 3 Seventythree
Roland GAIA SH-01
Native Instruments Komplete 7
Cool Edit Pro 2.1 (pretty lame, I know)
Behringer Micromix MX-400
Behringer UB2222FXpro
Proel NEXT12 HBA (2 pieces)
Roland KC-100
Fender CD-100CE LH

Currently unused:
Kurzweil PC2X
Hammond XB-2

On the wishlist:
BBE DI-400
Behringer DEQ2496 Ultra-Curve Pro
+ some other sound processors etc.

By the way, what software do you recommend for recording? Cubase, Sonar, ProTools?

Sounds like a nice rig!
I use Cubase and like it a lot. I think it's important to try them out a little first, and pick the one that makes the most sense to you. It also helps to find out what your friends have. If you get the same version as your buddy, you have some one to call if you run into trouble! ;)

It is a very nice rig indeed!
And thanks for the advice ... I was also thinking about Cubase (well, actually a friend of mine uses it, so there you have it, I have someone to call :D )

One more question (I see you are a Korg user) - where could I get a big brass sound? I love the brass from M3 (first heard it on Jackson's This is it DVD) but I don't plan to pay 2000€ just to get that one sound. I believe it's possible to make such a sound on the PC3 but I'm not experinced with V.A.S.T. programming nor did the sonikmatter people achieve anything near that cool sound ... Is there any Korg module with similar brass patches? I may consider buying a used one ...
