Any of you use headphones with the GAIA?

Postby JefCostello » Sun Feb 06, 2011 12:01 am

So I absolutely love the sound I get from my Groove Tuves Spacestation MKII, I'm using this as a monitor since it offers stereo like clean sound and would be what I'd use live. However, I found that my preferred listening volume levels are not shared by everyone at my household.

So I thought I could get some headphones, since this would extend the hours I could be able to play my GAIA. But I've found so many recommendations for headphones and no one saying they use them for the GAIA's sound. I've heard good things about the Sennheiser HD 280 Pro, the Grado SR60, and the Sony MDR V6.

I wanted to know if anyone here has used one of these or any other headphone, and if they could offer any comparisons or experiences; thanks and take care.

I bought the Sennheiser HD 448 yesterday, I think that’s one category cheaper than those HD 280 you mentioned… I’m happy with them, they give a clear sound, and I noticed a lot more body and details in the sound than through my regular amplifier. And they fit comfortably, not too tight.

I can’t really compare though, certainly not whether they are more suited for the GAIA specifically than others.

The HD 280 is a pretty good set. They are closed back and have a a nice, flat response with good range. AKG 240's are also good. They are an open back style (you can hear what is going on around you).
Both are around US$100.

I prefer the sound of the Sennheiser HD 280. I use them in rehearsal, recording and mixing. We rehearse with headphones, sound levels are much more controllable with closed phones, especially with drums and amplified guitar in the room.
The AKG 240s are a light and a bit more comfortable.
For the money, both are great.

I'm not familiar with the Sony MDR V6.

The HD 448 are officially of closed type, but actually also feels pretty open and lets through a fair amount of outside sound.

Hi Jef,

When I was a Soundware Engineer for Kurzweil in the early '90s I was
given a pair of Genelecs and a pair of Sony MDR-7506 headphones
to do my work.

Being a creature of habit, I have never found a reason to use any other
headphones for programming (with one exception: see below). The
resulting programs have always been well regarded.

Here is a partial list of gear I made presets on for these companies
while using the Sony MDR-7506:

Kurzweil K2000, K2500, K2600, PC-88 GM Board.
Alesis QuadraSynth, QS6, 7, 8.
E-MU esi-32, EIV.
Korg Prophecy, Trinity, Triton, microSTATION.
Roland VR-700, GAIA.
Yamaha Motif XS, XF...

plus many more 3rd party libraries as well.

Their fidelity, roadworthiness, and long-term comfort
has made me a loyal user for almost 20 years.

The only exception is that, lately, I sometimes use the
Direct Sound Extreme Isolation EX-29 Headphones
when I have to program in a noisy environment.

The bass is a little bit stronger than reality, but it's easy
to mentally compensate for. I made about 1/4 of all my
GAIA patches while using these.

Hope this heps,

Thank you all for the advice and suggestions. I guess now it's between the Sony MDR-7506 and the Sennheisers HD 280 Pro.

By the way Dan, I had forgotten to thank you for your great work on the Sweetwater and Fisher patches, you really pushed the GAIA in ways I hope we can continue as a community.
