Please Stop The Piracy

I'm certain that you started this user forum with the intention of it being
something positive for all GAIA owners.

But allowing your site to link to the piracy of GAIA sound libraries is,
in the long run, actually destructive to your goal.

Yes, everyone on your site gets to steal a bank of patches without paying
for them. And that might seem like a great thing to do. But the reality
is that serious programmers will no longer spend the many hours creating
new patches for the GAIA if all of their previous work is devalued as soon
as one of your Gaia Users members gets their hands on it.

Also, a free bank of 64 patches was offered by Roland. All the customer
had to do was fill out a simple survey about what they did or didn't use
on the GAIA. This info was to help Roland decide what directions new
operating systems and new products should take to be of the most value
to their customers. But no, even that was too much trouble for the Gaia
Users folk, and a direct link bypassing the survey is blatantly posted on
your site.

Think of the long term benefits to the GAIA and not the quick "steal it and
then help make it easy for everyone to steal it" mentality. It will make the
GAIA a better synth to own in the long run.

Hey Demon,

I think the admin simply hasn’t seen the message yet. The content in question that you are referring to has been posted only yesterday, and it’s the first case where illegal content was posted. There’s not really existing policy, and also there are no moderators yet. See the spam thread in the off topic discussion forum, we’re waiting for the admin (that’s rob, afaik) to log on and notice it. Hopefully then we can assign some moderators, I volunteered to be one.

By the way, the forum isn’t hosting the patches, there’s just a link to it. Moderating the link here will not remove the files from the internet. I agree with you though that it will be best if linking to illegal content (‘warez’) is not permitted on the forum. Regarding the free Fisher patches, I don’t think it’s a real problem to share them, but as long as they’re easily accessible through official channels probably better not to provide them here, true.

Hi Grauw,

My point was not that the Fisher Bank is linked to, but that it's linked
in such a way as to bypass taking the simple survey in order to get them.
If people take the survey, Roland will see that it was worth hiring
someone to create those patches and putting them online. If everyone
starts bypassing the easy-to-answer and non-invasive questions it will
look like not many people care about getting more patches.

Plus, Roland won't get as many responses as to what people are using
and not using their GAIA for. It just doesn't seem like it's too much to
ask someone to do for an entire bank of professionally-made patches.

I do not disagree with you but I wouldn’t go as far as calling that piracy, that’s just what I meant.

Hi Grauw,

The word "piracy" was in reference to the link to the Sweetwater bank.

When I found this site yesterday I was very excited to be able to help
fellow programmers and GAIA owners and signed up right away.

Within 60 seconds I found that two of my banks being were linked to
in inappropriate ways. You have to admit that it's not the way anyone
would want to be welcomed into a forum.

Now that it has been cleared up I am again planning to make myself
available for those who want to push the GAIA as hard as possible.

I thought Dan Fisher's video was an excellent demonstration of what can be programmed on the Gaia. Personally, I found it useful to know what can achieved on this synth.
Then I set about trying emulate some of the ideas that he had come up with and found it led me into all sorts of unexpected sounds.
Without creative people like Dan Fisher and Laurens Holst putting in the time and effort on their individual projects, this synth would not be developing as well as it is.
Great fun, but please no more illegal patch posting. Why not post some of your own patches and make this place a more interesting site to visit?

Hey Guys,

I've removed the links to the fisher and sweetwater patches. I've been neglecting my duties a little bit, in that I haven't been on the site that much lately. The patches section is meant for people to post patches that they have created themselves AND to promote patches for sale on other sites.

IF you see anything other problems like this let me know! Thanks for being part of the forum.

So speaking of "intellectual property" how much of a percentage of the sweet water patches does Pete Townsend get? After all he invented a couple of those sounds in the first place. And Steve Millar and ...
